It was only a month ago that the New Zealand Government announced its five stage-plan to reopen its borders to travellers across the world.

But in what has been seen as a huge u-turn, the government has announced that they are ready to open the border earlier.

Australia First

From 11.59pm, Tuesday April 12th, vaccinated Australians, including permanent residents, will be able to enter New Zealand without isolating.
We expect this to be warming received in Australia as we know there is pent up demand for returning kiwis, migration, reunions and holidays in NZ.

Visa-Waiver Countries Next

From 11.59pm (always a lovely time) on May 1st 2022, fully vaccinated travellers from visa-waiver countries will be able to enter the country.
This means travellers from over 60 countries including Canada and the USA will be able to visit New Zealand once again.

The government is hoping the accelerated opening will attract tourists and significantly working tourist who are desperately needed in the country’s vineyards and orchards.

We are naturally excited to see the doors finally opening and know Kiwis and other passport holders with homes and families in New Zealand are desperate to return.

Covid

Last month we high-lighted the number of airlines currently flying into New Zealand is at its lowest since the 1960s. So there is still limited capacity and the airfares may put off some travellers. Air New Zealand has notified a 5% increase in fares as of 16/03/22 due to the pressures on fuel prices caused by the Ukraine war.

Covid hasn’t peaked in New Zealand and there are currently around 20,000 reported cases a day with the Omicron variant. The word reported is important as there is overwhelming evidence that many cases are not being reported for fear of isolation and loss of earnings. Again, these high numbers, hospitalizations and sadly, a growing number of deaths will also make some people delay their trip.

What About the Unvaccinated?

All of the above applies to people who have been vaccinated against Covid-19.
Kiwis who have not been vaccinated will still need to enter MIQ just as they do now.

Unvaccinated children under five will be able to travel with their parents. A wider exceptions regime for children is being worked on.

MIQ has reverted back to a self-service model (no lottery) , with rooms available at any time for travellers to book.
