Winter Moving Tips

People generally prefer to move in warmer weather as summer coincides with holidays and the start of the new year, when we’re often motivated to make life changes. But sometimes we need to move when the conditions aren’t as favourable, when we’d rather hunker down by the fire with something warm and comforting in hand. Here are some winter moving tips to help you shift homes in the cold and very unpredictable off-season.

1. Summer is generally a peak period for professionals

Demand for moving services can be higher in summer as families with children tend to favour moving during this period. So, the first advantage of moving in winter is that movers tend to be more flexible with booking dates. This means you’ll be able to pick a date that makes the move easiest for you.

2. Pack carefully and take your time

If you’re planning to pack and move yourself rather than using professionals, make sure you give yourself lots of time to pack everything well. Cold wet conditions make lifting and carrying more hazardous, so you need to make sure all your possessions are well-protected and easy to move to reduce the chance of accidents and mishaps.

3. Plan for any weather on moving day

During winter, what you’ll wake up to is generally a lottery on moving day, so you’ll need to make plans for different conditions. If you get hard frosts, ice or snow, plan ahead for clearing paths, walkways and stairs so they’re not tripping, slipping or skating hazards. If it’s raining, you’ll need to adopt certain strategies for moving in wet weather. We’ve published a guide for moving in the rain if you need more information.

4. Be prepared on both sides of the move

Rain or shine, winter tends to leave everyone with wet or muddy boots if you’re going outside. Make sure you have mats, old sheets and floor coverings for protection from dirt and mess. Keep a stock of old towels handy if you need to quickly dry anything off. Make sure you have the power turned on at your new home, so everyone can enjoy a hot drink when they need one.

5. Drive safely

Whether your road trip to your new home is short or long, give yourself plenty of time to travel. Winter conditions can close roads or make them more dangerous, so you don’t want to be in a hurry to get to your destination. Delay the moving truck’s time of arrival if necessary, and make sure the entire family travels in comfort and safety.
