Where To Start Packing To Move

It’s not uncommon to dislike packing. Many people find it challenging. Where do you start packing to move? Which room should you pack first? How can you fit your entire home into a truck? Often, the task is intimidating before you’ve even started your first box. If you need some tips about where to start packing to move, we’ve got you covered.

Packing isn’t a quick job for most people, as you have to fit it around your daily life. Professional packers make it look easy, because we have the right materials, know how to pack efficiently and do it all at once. So, if you’re packing yourself, take a deep breath and prepare for a methodical approach.

Organise your packing materials

Packing is much easier when you have all the right materials on hand. Don’t worry too much about trying to work out how many boxes you’ll need. You can always get more if you don’t have enough.

Here’s what you need to get started:

  • Small, medium and large packing boxes
  • A few rolls of packing tape
  • Packing paper
  • Scissors
  • A permanent marker

Tip: You can buy small, medium and large packing combos at our box shop to get you started.

How to use your packing materials

Choosing the right sized box is all about weight. Once full, you should be able to lift and carry it easily without feeling overburdened. Small boxes are for heavy objects, like books and crockery. Medium boxes are for mid weight items, like pots and pans. Big boxes are for lightweight items, like clothes, linen and soft toys.

When you make up a box, seal the bottom with tape. Also seal the seams, as this gives the box better integrity. Get your packing paper and pen, and you’re ready to begin.

Getting started

The best place to start is with any items you don’t need immediately. Cupboards, attics, basements and other storage areas are a good way to kick off your packing. You can also pack up all your off-season clothing and items you won’t need until after you move.

Pack items into the box and note the contents on the outside of the box. This makes unpacking easier, as you don’t need to search through boxes to find what you need. Once you’ve worked your way through these areas, you’ll be well on your way.

Declutter

As you work your way through your house, ask yourself if you really need any item you haven’t used for a long time. If you don’t need the item anymore, you don’t need to pack it. Organise these items into piles to sell, donate, recycle or throw away.

Manage your time

Packing takes time. Most people can’t pack up their house over one weekend, or even many weekends. As soon as you know you’re moving house, get started right away. You’ll need to make sure you do some packing every day. It’s better to finish early than have a mad rush at the end. Set goals and reward yourself when you hit them.
