Moving Made Easier

Moving made easier when using the pros

Hiring professional movers makes any move much less stressful. Professionals have the equipment, experience and skills to relocate you from one property to another smoothly. But moving day can be made even easier with these handy tips. Here’s a short guide about how to make moving easier.

1. Delegate roles within the family well before moving day

Moving can feel like endless chaos without any planning. Even if you aren’t involved in the physical task of moving items, it’s important that everyone knows their role on the day. Specifically, you will need to have these roles assigned before the movers arrive. If you can, talk about it well before moving day so everyone is organised and ready to go.

Appoint a representative or liaison

Decide who will be your representative or liaison with the movers. This is an important role, so this person shouldn’t have to worry about any other tasks. Your liaison should be available to answer questions and provide any information the movers need to facilitate your move.

This includes any other service providers you may hire on the day, such as cleaners. This person needs full access to every part of the property to ensure everything gets done. If you can’t do this yourself, ask a trusted friend or family member to take on this role for the day.

Appoint a guardian

The guardian’s role is to take care of children and pets on moving day. Again, this is an important role, as well as a busy one, so don’t assign this person any other tasks. The guardian needs to keep children and pets fed, hydrated and entertained.

Children and pets are hazards for movers, so your guardian needs to ensure they’re kept out of the way to avoid accidents or injuries. Ideally, as moving is stressful and disruptive, it’s best to move children and pets off site if you can. The last thing you’ll want is for the dog to take an unplanned walk because the gate was left open.

2. The two most important tasks for moving day

Ensure your movers have the best access to your property

There are several steps to take with this task, starting by actually walking the route your movers will take when they arrive. Make sure you have the best possible parking space available for the moving truck.

Decide what area will give them best access to the house with the fewest obstacles. Obstacles include uneven or slippery surfaces such as mud, plants or any area where visibility is limited for any reason. Clear as many obstacles from the route between the truck and your house as you can.

Show your movers around

When your movers arrive, give them a tour of your property. This task should be handled by your liaison or representative. It’s a great opportunity to discuss what everyone needs to get the job done. This is also the time to point out obstacles, fragile items or any item that may be hard to move such as a piano.

While movers can work like machines, they will need access to the bathroom and refreshments, so point these out as you take your tour. Once everything is packed and loaded onto the truck, take another tour with your movers to make sure nothing has been left behind.
