How to reduce stress when moving to a new home

Moving to a new home is known to be one of the most stressful events in life, no matter how many times you’ve done it. As well as all the usual tasks you have in your day, you also have to manage packing and a myriad of other moving jobs. So how do you reduce stress and make the process easier so you don’t feel out of control? As experts, we have a few tips that could significantly reduce your stress levels leading up to and on moving day.

Make a checklist and use it

Lists are the single most useful tool for moving. There is so much to remember, it’s very easy to forget certain tasks. Once you’re behind, the process always feels like you’re catching up. Lists solve this problem, as long as you use them.

At a minimum, you need two lists. The first is for all the tasks you have to do ahead of moving day. The second is for the day itself, when we feel the most stress when moving. Note all the things you need to tell or ask your movers, and any tasks you need to complete on the day. These two lists will prevent you from forgetting anything, keep you focused and have a positive influence on progress, rather than compounding your stress.

Make a master inventory and use it

Labelling boxes with their contents is also a great stress reducer, and you’ll appreciate why it’s so important when you come to unpack. When we pack up a house, we also make a master inventory because it makes loading and unloading more efficient. We know exactly where to put each item in each room.

The advantage when unpacking is it’s easier to identify the boxes you want first. As you make your master inventory, give it a classification system that corresponds to each box you pack. Label boxes with a number, bold labels, colours for each room or all three. Then you’ll know which box you want at a glance.

Pack moving day bags for every member of your family

On moving day, everyone will feel much better if they have a bag of essentials on hand immediately. You’ll want each person to have a few changes of clothes, toiletries, medication, a phone charger and any other items as necessary. Also pack a bag with bedding, hand sanitiser, a first aid kit, snacks, drinks and any other essentials. It’s always a relief if you can lay your hands on these items without needing to search for them.

Ask your movers if you have questions

Prepare for arrival

Organise to have the keys and security codes waiting for you when you get to your new home to avoid delays. And make sure you have organised to get the essential amenities turned on prior to arrival including water, power, telecommunications, gas and any others. Having everything on and available will make everyone feel better.
