Eight problems you can avoid when moving furniture

Moving furniture is easy, right? You pick it up, put it in a truck and deliver it to your new house. Actually, moving furniture comes with a number of problems that require specialist skills and planning to avoid. Here’s a list of 8 common problems and one great tip about how you can make moving easier.

1. Accidents

We hear about moving accidents far too often: injured feet and toes, knocks, bumps, bruises and the worst of them all, injured backs. You should never attempt to lift anything you can’t easily pick up. If an item is beyond this limit, get trained movers to assist.

2. Damages

These go hand in hand with accidents. Moving anything anywhere comes with a risk of an accident.  When moving house, you have to factor in packing too and what happens to items in transit. Professional packing and handling is the best way to prevent damages.

3. Packing materials

If you’re doing the packing yourself, make sure you have sufficient packing materials for the job. You’ll need a lot more than you think. Most people never have enough, so they cut corners and that’s a recipe for more damages. Professional packers come armed to the teeth with materials and have specialist packing materials to minimize risk of damage.

4. Specialised handling

Do you know the correct way to handle every item in your house? Some items have to be moved in a particular way or you will damage them. Washing machines must be moved upright, some electronics also need careful handling and packaging. There are many others. If you’re not 100% certain, ask a professional for help.

5. Disassembly and reassembly

Many large items must be disassembled to be moved. If we had a dollar for every time we heard about a person who ‘couldn’t find a missing piece,’ we’d have... quite a few dollars. Professional movers specifically package and label these types of items to ensure nothing goes missing. They even put them back together for you too.

6. Insurance

So, you’ve dropped a box, but it’s okay because you have insurance. Did you pack the box yourself? The ins and outs of moving insurance is tricky. Generally you won’t be covered unless a professional packed the box. Talk to us about insurance before you move anything!

7. Loading the truck

Just like packing a box, the truck also needs to be packed in a particular way. For example, furniture should not bump against the walls of the truck, heavy items should be loaded on the floor and fragile items should be stacked on top. If you’re not sure how to load a truck, ask a professional for help.

8. Traffic

Particularly in our larger cities, traffic moves slowly during peak periods. If you’re moving items yourself, your move could end up taking a lot longer than you expected. We aim to get your items on one truck, for one trip, with the logistics planned for a timely delivery.
